Iana Gonzales
Returning to California at age nine, Iana embarked upon her jumping career, winning numerous championships from hunters to A/O Jumpers. At the age of 11, Iana was selected by Madam Jean Tisso (2 times Gold Olympic Jumper Rider) to train at her beautiful farm in Chantilly, France. Iana stayed there for two years and had the opportunity to compete on the European Circuit and did so with great success. Coming back to the U.S. from Europe at age 13, Iana continued showing Jumpers and she soon started her Dressage training with Susan Gustafson (FEI rider and trainer). At the age of 15, Iana suffered an accident that landed her in a wheelchair for a year. However, her love of horses remained, and soon she was back riding and training. In 1991, Iana moved to Italy. Taking advantage of the proximity of the European countries, she was able to attend numerous clinics. Iana was able to train at both of the Royal Schools in Spain and in Portugal. She also trained under Rafael Soto (2004 Individual Silver Medalist) and Julio Borba (head rider of the Royal Academy of Equestrian Art in Lisbon, Portugal). In 1997, Iana returned from Europe and accepted the position of Manager and Trainer for the Mexicali Equestrian Center, in Mexicali, Mexico, were many of her students became National State Champions. Iana moved to Tijuana, Baja California in the year 2000. There she became one of the Head Trainers for the Criadero Caliente and the Club Hipico. Criadero Caliente is the largest Lusitano and PRE (Pura Raza Espanola) equestrian center in South America with over 2000 horses. Iana and her student, Miguel Potenciano, were in charge of training 17 stallions. Their training involved starting four-year-olds to riding Grand Prix for the Dressage horses. They also had a quadrille of six stallions that were taught all the “Alta Escuela” or “Airs above the ground”. During this time, Iana achieved what no one else has achieved to date: she trained the first and only “Mexican National Champion from the State of Baja California”. Miguel and his horse “Archie” (a half Andalusian, half Thoroughbred gelding) competed against 73 of Mexico’s top horse and rider combinations to win the National Title. In 2004, Iana moved her business to San Diego, California. Within a short time, she had won numerous awards including “2006 CDS Lusitano Colt of the Year” with her own horse “Talisman”. She was also Reserve National Champion Third Level for the International Andalusian Lusitano Horse Association. Iana clinics regularly with Lena Wedenmark (USDF Level 4 Certified trainer, Gold, Bronze and Silver Medalist), and she is currently working on her USDF Certification and Medals. "I very much enjoyed doing business with Iana. She was fair, accommodating, and she worked hard for both parties. But more than that, in the process I got a glimpse into what kind of trainer she is, and I was left with an impression of a capable woman who is both highly knowledgeable and quietly encouraging..." Iana was born into the world of horses. Her father, Don Fernando Gonzalez Diaz-Lombardo (owner of the World Famous “Caliente” Racetrack, Tijuana, Mexico) sat her on a horse for the first time when she was two. At the age of seven, Iana began her training with Margarita Nava (10th Individual Dressage 1984 Olympics) in Mexico City.
